SUGGESTIONS FOR A TRIP TO SAN ANTONIO?

Friday, January 25th, 2008 | Permalink

My wife and I are going to San Antonio this weekend, and we’re looking for fun things to do while we’re down there. When traveling, we love food, art, old buildings, and people-watching. We know about the River Walk and the Alamo. Stuff off the beaten path. If you have suggestions, please leave them in the comments below or drop me an e-mail!

    From Adam:

    enjoyed the food at Rosario’s in the King Williams district: http://www.rosariossa.com/ (intersection of S. Alamo and S. St. Mary’s) The food was incredibly tasty when we went, and the place was packed at 3:00 on a Sunday afternoon, a good sign in my book.

    I’d suggest stopping by the Blue Star art complex while you’re down that way: http://www.bluestarart.org/ The main gallery might be between shows right now, but there should be something there to see.

    Fun fact: the scene in Pee-wee’s Big Adventure where he’s at the Alamo? The real Alamo was too boring, so they actually filmed the interior shots at a different mission somewhere in California. D’oh!

    And if you’re on the Riverwalk, a good version of Tex-Mex standard, Casa Rio

    More suggestions via e-mail:

    * McNay Art Museum.
    6000 N New Braunfels Ave
    San Antonio, TX 78209
    (210) 824-5368

    Small, cool little space.

    * And visit the campus of Trinity University (not that far from the McNay).
    Lovely architecture by Texan O’Neil Ford.

    * And Mi Tierra Tex-Mex restaurant in the Mercado downtown. Touristy, full of
    mariachis, but a staple of San Antonio late-night eating.
