MICHAEL CHABON READING AT BOOKPEOPLE
Thursday, May 8th, 2008 | PermalinkMy buddy Tim and I went to see writer Michael Chabon (“Shea as in stadium, Bon as in Jovi”) at Bookpeople last night. There were at least 100 people there. I picked up a copy of his beautiful new non-fiction collection with a Jordan Crane-designed cover.
During the Q&A, Chabon remarked of one of his characters, “He was too verbose and too Jewish.”
When he signed my book to “Meg + Austin,” I said, “Meg is my wife—she really likes your stuff.”
And Chabon (who seems like a really nice guy, by the way) joked, “Oh, and you don’t think it’s so hot?”
And I blushed and restrained myself from quoting his Q&A.
(Brilliant storyteller, but dang, he can be long-winded!)
Here’s Tim and I hanging out beforehand:
Good times!
PS. Wonder Boys is one of the greatest movies ever made. Not joking. And it has a kick-ass soundtrack. Go watch it.
PPS: The Amazing Adventures of Lethem and Chabon.

PS I thought Wonder Boys was brilliant when I saw it back in college, but none of my friends agreed. it makes you wanna go make a story! And the Bob Dylan in it is great, too.

I ((heart)) this drawing. I would buy a tiny print of that drawing to put in my studio wall.
I saw him speak in NYC last year about writing “The Yiddish Policemen’s Union” and the drawing, more or less fits for that too!
A fun note: He sat down afterward for a Q & A and the interviewer said “I don’t know where to start” and he replied “We can talk about “Buffy”.
Wonder Boys is both a brilliant novel and film, I love them both as separate entities.
And btw – I don’t know you, just stumbled in following links from blogs from links from blogs. Like one does.
And I thought I would comment. Because noisy praise from total strangers is never a bad thing.

ps. “Way Down in the Hole” is the song, strangely, that made me start a lifelong love affair with Tom Waits records.
Your muxtape is wonderful.

I think my favorite part here is the different eyebrows.

Bonnie: Rock on! Thanks for all the good words!
Mark: I have to admit, my eyebrows were a result of me talking about Jeffrey Brown…
