LYNDA BARRY IS MY FAVORITE LIVING ARTIST

Saturday, May 10th, 2008

Just in case you wondered. Meeting her was a turning point in my creative life. And look: here’s a good portrait of her in the New York Times. Everyone go out and buy her new book next week.

“We went to the page to find something, to have an experience.”

I love that line from the NYT audio slideshow, talking about how we approached art as kids vs now. We didn’t wait for something to happen first and then express it. Just made stuff.

Beautiful quote, and really gets to the heart of her process: NOT-KNOWING!

  3. Austin Kleon Says:

    The whole quote:

As kids…we went to the page to find something, to have an experience. As adults, we have it backwards. We think that we need to have an experience in order to write about it. And I’ve found teaching this class that actually it’s the opposite: we’re writing in order to have an experience.
