This promotion (the “Contest”) is sponsored by HarperCollins Publishers, 10 East 53rd Street, New York, New York, 10022 (the “Sponsor”).

ELIGIBILITY & ENTRY

NO PURCHASE NECESSARY. To enter, go to

(the “Site”), follow the instructions for composing and entering a “blackout poem”. You may only submit one entry to each of the four entry pools. The Sponsor will post the newspaper article that is to be the basis for the entries in an entry pool on the commencement date for that entry pool. Multiple entries will be rejected.

The Contest is open to legal residents of the United States (excluding its territories and possessions) 18 years of age or older, excluding employees and immediate family members of the Sponsor, and its parent, subsidiaries, affiliates, assigns, advertising, promotional and fulfillment agents, attorneys, and other representatives and the persons with whom each of the above are domiciled. Offer void outside the United States and wherever prohibited or restricted by law.

Each entrant in the Contest must be the rightful owner or have authorized use of the e-mail account indicated by the entrant’s e-mail address. In the event of a dispute concerning the identity of the winner submitting an entry, the winner will be deemed to be the person in whose name the e-mail account is opened. The e-mail account must be opened prior to 9:00 a.m. on (EST) on August 1, 2008.

ENTRY PERIOD

The Contest includes four separate entry pools. The first will commence on August 1, 2008 (9:00 A.M. EST), and all entries must be received by August 22, 2008 (5:00 P.M. EST). The second will commence on September 1, 2008 (9:00 A.M. EST), and all entries must be received by September 21, 2008 (5:00 P.M. EST). The third will commence on October 1, 2008 (9:00 A.M. EST), and all entries must be received by October 23, 2008 (5:00 P.M. EST). The fourth will commence on November 1, 2008 (9:00 A.M. EST), and all entries must be received by November 21, 2008 (5:00 P.M. EST).

You may only submit one entry to each of the entry pools. Each entry pool will be judged separately.

SELECTION AND NOTIFICATION OF WINNERS

All entries submitted in accordance with these Official Rules will be judged by two editors selected by the Sponsor based on the following criteria: (i) poetic quality (25%), (ii) readability (25%), (iii) originality (25%) and (iv) creativity/transformation of article (25%). Based on these criteria, the Judges will select from each entry pool a grand prize winner and three (3) runners-up. In the event of a tie, the judges will compare the tied entries directly based on the foregoing criteria.

The potential winners for each entry pool will be selected by December 30, 2008.

All potential winners will be notified by e-mail and requested to complete an Affidavit of Eligibility. If the potential winner fails to return the executed Affidavit of Eligibility within 5 days of notification, an alternate potential winner will be chosen.

PRIZES

Each of the winners will receive one copy of Newspaper Blackout Poems by Austin Kleon (the “Book”). Approximate retail value: $12.95. Approximate retail value of all prizes: $208.

In addition, the Sponsor reserves the right to include the entries of one or more winners in one or more editions of the Book, and in the advertising and promotion for the Book; however, Sponsor is under no obligation to do so.

CONDITIONS

By entering this Contest, entrants signify their acceptance of the Official Rules and decisions of the judges, which will be final in all respects; and to waive any claim to ambiguity of the Official Rules. Entrants further agree to assign their ownership rights in their entries to Sponsor and to grant to Sponsor a royalty-free, non-exclusive, perpetual, worldwide license to use and publicly display the entries in any and all media, now known and hereafter devised, including without limitation the Internet, and for any purposes, including advertisement and promotion, without further compensation, except where prohibited by law.

The entrants release, discharge, and hold harmless Sponsor and its parent, affiliates, subsidiaries, assigns, attorneys, representatives and agents, including advertising, promotion and fulfillment agencies, from any and all liability or damages arising from the use of any prize awarded and the administration of the Contest, including, without limitation, the following: (i) late, lost, incomplete, delayed, misdirected or unintelligible entries, (ii) any printing, typographical, administrative or technological errors in any materials associated with the Contest, and (iii) any damage to the entrant’s computer, related equipment, data files, and software resulting from entrant’s downloading of information regarding the Contest or participation in the Contest.

Sponsor may only use the personally identifiable information obtained from the entrants in accordance with its privacy policy, which may be found at www.hc.com

Sponsor reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to modify, cancel or suspend this Contest should a virus, bug, computer problem or other causes beyond Sponsor’s control corrupt the administration, security or proper operation of the Contest. Sponsor may prohibit you from participating in the Contest or winning a prize if, in its sole discretion, it determines that you are attempting to undermine the legitimate operation of the Contest by cheating, hacking or employing other unfair practices or by abusing other entrants or the representatives of Sponsor.

ANY ATTEMPT BY AN ENTRANT TO DELIBERATELY DAMAGE THE WEBSITE OR UNDERMINE THE OPERATION OF THE CONTEST MAY BE IN VIOLATION OF CRIMINAL AND CIVIL LAWS, AND, IN SUCH EVENT, SPONSOR RESERVES THE RIGHT TO PURSUE ITS REMEDIES AND DAMAGES (INCLUDING COSTS AND ATTORNEY’S FEES) TO THE FULLEST EXTENT OF THE LAW.

THE ODDS OF WINNING DEPEND UPON THE NATURE, QUALITY AND NUMBER OF ELIGIBLE ENTRIES.

Any dispute arising from the Contest will be determined according to the laws of the State of New York, without reference to its conflict of laws principles, and the entrants consent to the personal jurisdiction of the State and Federal Courts located in the State and County of New York over them and agree that such courts have exclusive jurisdiction over all such disputes.
