[...] Anyway, I heard through the grapevine that his Advanced Writing class was working on “blackout” poems- something I erroneously thought was foolishly easy. NW was trying to explain them to a group of us, and I at first thought these poems were constructed by just looking at a newspaper page, picking out words you wanted to use, and then writing those words poetically on another page. That didn’t seem very “highbrow” to me - until NW demonstrated how to actually make one. He sat there with his pen for the better part of 15 minutes circling words in a newspaper article in a seemingly uncharted fashion, then colored out huge chunks of the article – but when it was all done, a decent poem jumped out of the page. The frontman of this strategy, Austin Kleon, is more of a “Michaelangelo” than I thought – check out this video NW sent us: http://www.austinkleon.com/newspaperblackout/!
